Christmas Cards Across the Miles: Sending a Little Piece of NZ Overseas

The Card That Travels the Furthest

Every Christmas, cards set off from New Zealand on long journeys. To a sister in London, a best friend in Sydney, grandparents in Canada, a son who moved to Tokyo for work. They travel further than almost anything else we send, and they are often the ones that matter most.

When someone you love lives on the other side of the world, a phone call or a video chat is wonderful. But a card is different. It is something they can hold, stand on the mantelpiece and read again on Christmas morning. It is proof that you thought of them, chose something for them and took the time to write.

A Little Piece of Home

For anyone living overseas, a card from New Zealand carries more than a message. It carries a little bit of home.

That is why we love seeing our cards head overseas. Each Golly Gosh design was hand arranged from real NZ botanicals and natural materials, then professionally photographed by Mark. When someone far away opens a card featuring pōhutukawa, the flower Kiwis know as the New Zealand Christmas tree, it can bring back summer Christmases, beach days and the place they come from.

Choosing the Right Card

Think about who the card is going to and what they might be missing. For family and friends who grew up here, a botanical design can feel like a postcard from home. For grandchildren or little ones overseas, one of our playful illustrated characters adds a bit of fun.

Every Golly Gosh greeting card is printed on premium card stock, so it feels like a small piece of art, and it holds up well on a long journey.

Best for: family overseas, friends who have moved away, anyone who misses New Zealand at Christmas.

Something Small to Tuck In

If you would like to send a little more than a card, choose something that travels well. A botanical tea towel folds flat, weighs very little and brings a touch of New Zealand into someone's kitchen every day. A cotton canvas tote bag also folds flat and makes a practical gift they will use long after Christmas.

Tip: flat, lightweight gifts usually cost less to post overseas, so you can send a little more love for less.

Post Early, Worry Less

International mail takes longer at Christmas, and the cut-off dates come around sooner than most people expect. This year, NZ Post's target dates for its economy service are Tuesday 24 November for the rest of the world, Tuesday 1 December for Asia, Canada, Europe and the UK, Friday 4 December for the South Pacific, and Monday 7 December for the United States. For Australia, it is between Friday 4 and Friday 11 December, depending on where your card is going. Courier and Express services give you a little more time.

Dates can change, so check the latest on the NZ Post Christmas sending dates page before you post. Then work backwards: choose your cards in early November, write them over a cup of tea one evening, and get them in the post with time to spare.

Tip: write your list of overseas addresses now, so you are not hunting for them the week before the cut-off.
